Mal’s workation story

See how Mal made the most of her working holiday

Mal’s workation reel

I am a busy Mum of 2 who works in the corporate world and operates a side business. Every now and again I need a little escape for myself, even if that means bringing my work with me!

In October, I took the opportunity to spend a few days on Bribie Island staying at Holiday House Bribie. Walking into the Shell House, the brightness and décor of the house felt so refreshing. The main area was open and had an immediate sense of relaxation and peacefulness.

I had a little work to finish off but I knew my few days here would be great R&R! I have experienced a hectic few months and I needed a reset before the crazy Christmas season approaches.

I’m a bit of a foodie and like to try the local cafes and restaurants so I ventured to Bongaree and ordered the Banh Mi Eggs at Annie Lane. Being a HUGE lover of Banh Mi (and anything pork belly) this hit the spot! The Vietnamese flavours were spot on and topped with crunchy pork – I was won over!

Together with fresh juice and the vibrancy that was presented, I had forgotten about my everyday, hectic life. I was in vacation mode.

I spent some of the day baking in the sun on Red beach. I also checked out White Patch and Banksia Beach, and had a general look around. I have never spent a decent amount of time on Bribie so it was nice to take it all in. This place is such a beautiful little island, and so accessible and close to Brisbane.

After a great day exploring around, I returned to the house where a storm rolled in late afternoon which then followed with an amazing red sky for sunset.

The Shell House has high speed WiFi so I checked my emails and returned some calls. Then I settled into the house for the night, on the large lounge enjoying some Netflix and a cup of tea.

The kitchen is fully equipped with everything you need. The finishing touches and leather handles make the space feel inviting and warm.

The bedroom is spacious, bright and had the best sleep – the bed is extremely comfortable.

Day 2 I enjoyed a little sleep in, then made a coffee before walking down the end of the street to the local cafes.

The Shell House at Holiday House Bribie is fantastic; only a few minutes walk to Woorim beach and shops making it such a convenient location. I tried something new again for breakfast at Mokha Café – Chicken, Haloumi, Bacon & Egg Waffles with maple syrup. What a feast and so scrumptious!

Needless to say I then felt the need to walk that off by enjoying a long stroll on the beach. The winds had picked up that day so I decided it wouldn’t be a beach day on this side of the island.  Luckily the other side of the island was only a 7 minute drive away.

The picnic blanket and basket from the house is super cute and I could not pass the opportunity to use this.

A friend of mine joined me, and we soaked up the sunshine and enjoyed a picnic at Bongaree.

It was such a beautiful afternoon of relaxation, and no hustle and bustle to be seen.

After a quick freshen up at the house, I returned to the Bongaree side to watch the Sunset, which was another stunner. A beautiful end to such a relaxing day.

I settled in for the night with some Netflix and candles burning, just enjoying the quiet and calm.

The next morning I popped into Little Mike’s down the road and ordered the Coconut Oats & Berries and fresh pressed juice. This was another delicious find. I sat on the beach for some time just enjoying the sunshine and sound of the waves. Then I returned to The Shell House to take a video call. I hope that I did not look too relaxed!

It’s a Wednesday so I decided to check out the Butterfly House, which is open Sundays & Wednesdays. What a beautiful experience that was! You can wander throughout the open butterfly house at your own leisure and stay as long as you wish.  I could watch them all day!  I had several butterflies landing on me because I was wearing a yellow top – apparently they are attracted to white, yellow and orange tones.

This was a nice end to my stay here. I had the most wonderful few days taking in Bribie Island and relaxing in a house with beautiful refreshing surrounds. I definitely need to come back again. Never forget to take some time out for yourself and escape life for a little bit – it’s important to refresh and reset now and again. Even if you are technically working!
